The Olympic Peninsula and Olympic Mountain Range protect the Puget Sound Region from the worst weather coming in from the Pacific Ocean. Washington is divided roughly in half by the Cascade Mountain Range. Western Washington having a mild climate known for grey skies and rain. Eastern Washington in contrast is drier has greater temperature extremes.
