Ferndale (Section 29; Township 39N; Range 2E)

This community on the lower Nooksack River, is six miles northwest of Bellingham in northwest Whatcom County. It grew rapidly during the 1950s, after the building of a large oil refinery in the vicinity. It was named by Alice Eldrige, the first schoolteacher, in 1876 for the many ferns growing near the school house. Originally it was known as Jam for a log jam in the nearby river.
