What is Battle of the Books?
In the 1930's Battle of
the Books was a Chicago radio program. Today it is a
reading incentive program in elementary, middle and high
schools across the country. All of the questions in the
competition begin with the words "In which book" and
the correct answer is always the title of the book.
In our school students are introduced to the new battle
books in September. The lists are pulled from our state’s
Sasquatch nominees (www.wlma.org/sasquatch) and our region’s
YRCA nominees (http://www.pnla.org/yrca/index.htm). Most
students begin reading right away! Beginning in January,
we meet every Friday at lunchtime for practice rounds.
In March we will compete within our school. The top 3
teams (up to12 students) will then to go the district
finals and compete against teams from Custer Elementary,
Skyline Elementary and Eagleridge Elementary. It’s
never too late to start!
