Who Is Considered Homeless?

Homelessness affects one student in every fifty in the United States.

Homeless means you don't have a stable, long-term place to stay. It's doubling up with relatives or close family friends. Or, you may be sleeping in a car, park, or temporary shelter.

Recognize the Signs of Homelessness

In this economy more and more families are homeless.

Over 277 were families with school-aged children and youth were identified in the 2011 Homeless Count in Whatcom County. Of the 1,311 individuals counted:

  • 449 persons under 18 years old, or 37% of all homeless persons for whom age is known
  • 21% of all homeless persons are less than 10 years old
  • 207 persons are 16 to 21 years old
  • 264 persons are 16 to 24 years old
  • At least 57 homeless youth (age 0-17) are unaccompanied
