Day 7 - 9/16
  1. Q.o.t.D. #4 - Talk to me about how the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan affect you.  Do you know anyone who is in the military?  What do you think about the idea of "duty to your country" and patriotism?  In what cases is it reasonable or even necessary to go to war?
  2. Go to the lab and work on the American Dream Project.  
  3. Create your Opening Page in PowerPoint.  
  4. Continue with research.



Day 6 - 9/15
  1. Read the Gettysburg Address.  How do you think Abraham Lincoln's American Dream was different from Jefferson's and the other "Founding Fathers?"  Write down your ideas to discuss.
  2. Discussion:

  4. Intro: Family Story/Family Tree
  5. Go to Family Search and look up one of your ancestors, or do a search for a family name in an area that your family has lived.
  6. Begin work on your family tree.
  7. Assignment: Ask your parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles/etc. for help completing your family tree.  While getting names ask if there are stories that go with the names.


         

Day 5 - 9/14

  1. Q.o.t.D. #3 - Do we (Americans) work too hard?  40-60 hrs/wk?  2-4 Wks vacation/yr?  Do we work to live or live to work?  What about the adults you know?  How are they doing?  Stress level? Burn-out?  Attitude ?  Health?
  2. Research: Here are links to specific types of information that may be helpful in your research: immigration/emigration, families, social life, chronological (time), location.
  3. Expectations: Final Project will include 8-10 slides with graphics, transitions and text.  The text should tell the life story and American dream of your central character.

                
                   
Day 4 - 9/13 
  1. Read paragraph 2 of the Declaration of Independence by going to the National Archives.  Click on "Charters of Freedom."  When you get to the word Prudence. stop reading.  Write down any words that are archaic to discuss and define later. Paraphrase this section in your notebook.   What does it mean in modern language?
  2. With a partner, share your paraphrase and write a list of the main points in your own language.
  3. Discussion: Share with the class the main points.  How is this still true today?  Or is it?
  4. Return to the lab and go to American Dream Project.  
  5. What is the Role/Person you have chosen to research?  Civil War nurse?  Prohibition T-Man?  Illegal Alien?  Write as a heading in your notebook.  Pick a name for your character.
  6. Begin research.
          

Day 3 - 9/12
  1. Q.o.t.D. #2 - Tell me what you know about your Ancestor's origins, where they lived, when they arrived in North America, branches of the family tree, training/education/career, religion, traditions.
  2. Research: Start research for your American Dream ProjectTake Notes as you go!  Check out the Resources links. 


Day 2 - 9/9
  1. Create "astudent" Folder in TempStudFold on altsnap/students/TempStudFold.
  2. Create a subfolder titled Jr English
  3. Reading: What is the American Dream.  Explore the links within the writing.  When you get to the question "Is this your American Dream?" go to Brainstorm Activity.
  4. Getting to Class assignments online.  A few words about saving your work.
  5. Sum up your days thoughts on the American dream in a few paragraphs.  Save it in your Junior English file.


Day 1 - 9/8

  1. Introduction: Go over syllabus.
  2. Concept of Question of the Day: Q.o.t.D.
  3. Q.o.t.D. #1 - What is first and foremost on your mind now (today, yesterday, this summer).  Tell me where you went this summer emotionally, intellectually, physically.  [2/3-3/4 page (I will give extra points for more.)]
