Word of the Day: oscitant (OS-i-tant) adjective - 1. Yawning, gaping from drowsiness.  2. Inattentive, dull, negligent.

  1. Q.o.t.D. #13 - Lifetime Achievement Award.  The year is 2050.  You are being given a lifetime achievement award.  In third person describe your accomplishments.  Consider family, career, hobbies, etc.

  1. Q.o.t.D. #11 -  Create a place of peace for yourself.  Describe in depth, detail.  What does it smell, taste, sound, smell, feel like?  It might be a real place or a place in your imagination.  Make it so real that when you are stressed you can imagine yourself in an oasis of calm.
  2. Edit your "Place of Peace" as if you were reading someone else's work.  Use the list we created that you wrote in your notebook.

  1. Read Sample Persuasive Essays.
  2. Work on Rough Draft of Persuasive Essay Due at the end of the Period.
    • Turn in typed, 12 pt font, double-spaced with your student # at the top.

  1. Reading: The Promised Visit, p82 in Journeys.  
  2. Answer the following questions in your notebook.
    1. Close-up: 1-5

  3. Work on Final Draft or Finish Rough Draft of narrative essay.

 

Day 6 - 9/13
  1. Mad Libs.
  2. Q.o.t.D. #3 - Tell me what makes your generation different than the ones before?  Do you have a generation identity?  What would you call your generation?
  3. Revision suggestions.
  4. Type: your Q.o.t.D. in Word.  Give it a title and save it into your English folder.  Print it out without your name on it.
  5. Turn it into Rob
  6. Art and Etiquette of Critiquing
  7. Make suggestions for improvement.

  1. Read: In Formation  by Rob and answer the following questions.
    • What is "genre"?  Give some examples.
  2. How is reading Fiction different from reading the news?



Day 4 - 9/11
  1. Reading: 15 minute read.
  2. Discussion: How does this writing on the Internet different from what we read in the newspaper?
  3. Read "One Hot Night"
  4. What constitutes "Good" writing?
  5. Paragraph I assignment.
  6. Come in tomorrow with a personal experience you can write about.  It could be an accident, a concert, a sporting event or something else active with sensory details.
 

Day 3 - 9/8
  1. Q.o.t.D. #2 - How does technology fit into your life?  What kinds of technology make your life easier?  Think of anything that is a modern creation: electronics, plastics, etc.  What about technology that you don't appreciate, that doesn't make your life easier?
  2. Lab Intro
  3. A few words about saving your work.
  4. Create "astudent" Folder in TempStudFold on altsnap/students/TempStudFold.
  5. Create a subfolder titled Fr/So English
  6. Getting to Class assignments online/on the network.
  7. Open Word.  Write me a note.  Save it in your folder.  Tell me about the last week. 
  8. Go to a News Site and find a story on 9/11 anniversary, the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Some choices are CNN, MSNBC.
  9. How does this writing differ from what we read in the newspaper?
