Read: Chapter 1 Ron Glodoski: How to be a Successful Criminal - When you have finished answer the following questions: What is your immediate response to reading this chapter?  How did the writing effect you? What is different/similar about this reading that is significantly different than other reading we have done in this class. How would you Categorize the mode of writing?  P.E.N.D.? Persuasive, Expository, Narrative or Descriptive.  Is there more than one mode?  If so which is primary (the strongest?) which are secondary?
  2. Research and Rough Draft writing on Persuasive Essay: The most important thing at this point is to get ideas on paper.  Do one or more of the following pre-write activities. Make a list of points in your argument. Make a Venn Diagram or a Mind-map Brainstorm connections Make lists of what you know, what you're unsure of and what you need to know to write this paper.
  3. Homework: Be ready to come in on Monday and finish a rough draft.

Q.o.t.D. #9 - Friday is grade day.  In this class you will finish multiple drafts of your expository essay and have one more Q.o.t.D.    What  do you need to finish for this class?  Do you need to do some homework this week?  Has Rob graded your notebook recently?   WHat have you learned in this class?  What do you need to finish for other classes?

  1. Q.o.t.D. #8 - Tell me about yesterday.  Use paragraphs, use as many sensory details (sights, tastes, sound, touch, scent) as you can.  Start with getting up, go to going home after school.
  2. Writing rough drafts of Expository paper.  Due at end of period Thursday.

Day 13 - 9/27
  1. Read from Scholastic Art Magazine.
  2. Read from a fiction novel
  3. Compare/Contrast writing styles
  4. Introduce Expository writing assignment.  Topic: Your choice.  You're going to teach the reader about something.  Pick a topic you are knowledgeable about and care about.  The purpose is not to spend days researching, but rather to practice formal writing skills..  2 pp., D.S., Times New Roman or Courier New font.  Minimum of five paragraphs: Intro, Body (3), Conlcusion.  May include a small graphic on each page.  Rough draft due by end of period Thursday.

  1. Q.o.t.D. #7 - Tell me what your perfect school would be like physically.  How many students?  What kinds of rooms?  Facilities?  Student  areas?

  1. Q.o.t.D. #6 - Choose one of the following phrases and write 2/3-3/4 of a page.  Remember conventions.  Paragraphs!

    • "The mulit-colored leaves coated the ground..."

  4. Finish revision and turn into Rob


Day 8 - 9/20
  1. Q.o.t.D. #5 - "Place of Peace"  Create a place of peace for yourself.  Describe in depth, detail.  What does it smell, taste, sound, smell, feel like?  It might be a real place or a place in your imagination.  Make it so real that when you are stressed you can imagine yourself in an oasis of calm.
  2. Read: Art and Etiquette of Critiquing
  3. Exchange for critique
  4. Go back to revise.  Turn it back in to Rob with your name on it, the Critique Rubric and the Rough draft.


Day 7 - 9/17
  1. Q.o.t.D. #4 - What helps you write?  Think about physical space, sound, position, pen vs. keyboard.  What do you like to write about?  Tell me about the process of writing and typing the Q.o.t.D. yesterday and the day before.  Was the topic too broad?  Did you make changes when you typed it in?

Day 6 - 9/16
  1. Print out your Q.o.t.D. without your name on it.  Make sure it is saved in your Fr/So English folder in TempStudFold(er)
  2. Turn it into Rob
  3. Art and Etiquette of Critiquing
  4. Make suggestions for improvement.
  5. Round one of critiques
  6. Read critiques and revise.
  7. Turn in Draft 2 to Rob
 

Day 5 - 9/15
  1. Q.o.t.D. #3 - Write down the personal experience you were asked to remember yesterday.  It could be an accident, a concert, a sporting event or something else active with sensory details. 
  2. Revision suggestions.
  3. Type: your Q.o.t.D. in Word.  Give it a title and save it into your English folder.  Print it out without your name on it.
  4. Turn it into Rob
  5. Art and Etiquette of Critiquing
  6. Make suggestions for improvement. 
 

Day 4 - 9/14
  1. Reading: 15 minute read.
  2. Discussion: How does this writing on the Internet different from what we read in the newspaper?
  3. Read "One Hot Night"
  4. What constitutes "Good" writing?
  5. Paragraph I assignment.
  6. Come in tomorrow with a personal experience you can write about.  It could be an accident, a concert, a sporting event or something else active with sensory details.
 

Day 3 - 9/13
  1. Q.o.t.D. #2 - How does technology fit into your life?  What kinds of technology make your life easier?  Think of anything that is a modern creation: electronics, plastics, etc.  What about technology that you don't appreciate, that doesn't make your life easier?
  2. Lab Intro
  3. A few words about saving your work.
  4. Create "astudent" Folder in TempStudFold on altsnap/students/TempStudFold.
  5. Create a subfolder titled Fr/So English
  6. Getting to Class assignments online/on the network.
  7. Open Word.  Write me a note.  Save it in your folder.  Tell me about the last week. 
  8. Go to a News Site and find a story on hurricanes in Florida.  Some choices are CNN, MSNBC.
  9. How does this writing different from what we read in the newspaper?
