  2. WASL Reading: Practice Assignment #4 - Tree of Life
  3. Narrative Essay Assignment: Pick one of the 25 memories and brainstorm details about it.  Think about all five senses - STSTS.  Sight, Touch, Scent, Taste, Sound.

  2. Spelling Test #5: strait, straight, suppose, choose, chose, whose, received, caught, cot, business.  Use them in complete sentences.

Q.o.t.D. #15 - Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Tell me about a time that you or someone you know was discriminated against.  Try to put me, the reader into the moment.  Consider: Discrimination can be racial, religious, gender, sexual, age-related (youth/adult/aged),  or class-based (Poor/Middle Class/Rich).

    2. Look at the Book Report form.  Pick a 3-4 of the possible projects A-O.  Write them down and add a sentence or two of brainstorm to think about possibilities.
    3. If you are not halfway through you will need to find extra time to read outside of class.
  3. Peer Edit: Turn in your current draft of the Best Motion Picture Essay without your name on it.



Day 17 - 12/9
  1. Q.o.t.D. #9 -  "If I had a million dollars..."  What would you do with it?  How would you spend it?  What gifts would you buy and for whom?

    4. What has frustrated you during the book?  Why?

Day 15 - 12/7
  1. Q.o.t.D. #8 -  When has a movie, song or other work of art made you feel?  What was the work of art and how did it make you feel?  Sad, angry joyful, depressed, triumphant?  What good is Art?  Consider everything from TV to a mime or street musician, WWF to stadium concerts to break dancing to gymnastics, movies, plays improv, etc.
  2. Persuasive Essay: Best Dang Movie.  Turn in First Draft.

  2. Reading Journal #7: Answer the following questions. USE COMPLETE SENTENCE FOR THESE QUESTIONS.
  1. What was new in the reading today?
  2. What is the most vivid scene so far in the book?  Describe it.
  3. Who is the antagonist and what is their goal?  What is getting the way of achieving that goal?
  1. Spelling/Vocabulary Words: college, collage, measure, several, weight, wait, certain, finally, scientist, exercise
  2. Persuasive Essay: Best Movie of All Time.  Show Rob Outline.


Day 13 - 12/3
  1. Q.o.t.D. #7 -  Tell me about a time when you were excited about learning (in or out of school)? Tell me about the time and energy you put into it.   Why was it enjoyable?
  2. Persuasive Essay: Best Dog-gone Movie
  3. Pick your Favorite movie of all time and write a persuasive essay about why it is the best. The Internet Movie Database is a great place to start.  Check out their Top 250 Movies of all time.  If you would prefer not  to write about a movie, you may instead choose another  art form such as a CD. 


Day 12 - 12/2
  1. Novel Read: 15 minutes
  2. Reading Journal #6: Answer the following questions.
  1. What page/chapter are you on in the book?  How many pages/chapters are there?  What percentage of the book have you read?
USE COMPLETE SENTENCE FOR THE NEXT QUESTIONS.
  1. What was new in the reading today?
  2. Who is the protagonist and what is their goal?  What is getting the way of achieving that goal?
  1. Writing Summaries: Read Pro argument. Write summary as a class.  Read Con argument, Write summary individually.

Day 11 - 12/1
  1. Q.o.t.D. #6 -  Tell me why the following statement is untrue, misleading or why it incites anger and misunderstanding.  "Alternative high school education is an easy way to get a diploma, thats why only teen age parents , drug addicts and students with behavioral problems attend."
  2. More 6-Trait Rubrics: Evaluate student essay with 6 Trait rubric. Score and give reasons.  Share with class.

  2. Reading Journal #5: Answer the following questions.
  1. Write a summary of what has happened in the book so far.  This should be about half a page.  Try to capture the essential occurences with enough but not too many details.
  2. What do you think will happen next in the book?
  1. Spelling/Vocab: where, were, there, their, they're, through, threw, quiet, quite, enough
  2. Personal Intro: Self-Evaluate with 6-Trait rubric. Turn in 3rd Draft.

  1. Q.o.t.D. #5 Describe what kinds of work you would like to do to keep a roof over your head and food on the table?  What have you done in your life that felt really good when you finished it?  As a kid I loved chopping wood, but I hated mowing the lawn.

    • How is the main character similar/disimilar to you?

  2. Reading Journal #2: Answer the following questions.
    • What is the initial problem faced by the main character(s)? How is it faced
    • Who are the main characters and what are they like?  Describe them in detail.
    • What new has occurred in the plot? 
    • What do you notice about the authors writing style?  Is the story told in First or Third Person P.O.V. (Point of View)?  Does the author use a lot of dialogue?  Give an example of dialogue that stands out as good or bad and explain why it stands out.
