Choosing a Good Password for Computer Access & Protection

A good password should be 8-11 [or more] characters (letters/numbers) long.

It should be made up of a combination of letters and numbers, upper and lower case and odd characters.

It should not include any part of your phone number, your social security number or your name.

The best way is to come up with some song lyrics. Iíll use "Feel Like a Number" by Bob Seger

Feel like a number, feel like a stranger in this town

This a good phrase because it is eleven words. Now assign each word a letter, number or other character from the keyboard. Here are some possibilities:

Fla#flasitt fl@#fl@sitt F1anf1a5itt F7@#f7@5itt

Or this one:

Over the river and through the woods

to grandmotherís house we go

Otr@ttw2ghwg otrattwtghwg

Even when using only letters they donít come out making any sense. Sense/logic is what a hacker and his/her computer are looking for. This may not be important to you now, but someday it could become very important. You do not want to share your password with anyone and when you are on a network never give someone your password to log-on.

Never, ever write it down. Or if you do need to write it down donít write it where someone else can easily find it.
