Welcome to Ferndale High School!
A message from Principal Aaron Kombol
Hello Golden Eagles and Golden Eagle Families,
Welcome to the 2013.14 school year! A special welcome to our newest members of the Golden Eagle family, our freshman, the Class of 2017. Over the summer and into the fall we have been busy working on improving FHS both in out of the classroom.
Our recent state test scores clearly show that we are moving in the right direction! Our teachers are working hard to make sure that their students are receiving the best education possible. Our students are meeting that challenge and showing impressive gains in ALL areas.
In summary, our latest test scores show:
Writing up 9.1% (from 79.5% to 88.6% meeting standard)
Reading up 12.8% (from 77.7% to 90.5% meeting standard)
Algebra up 14.0% (from 65.3% to 79.3% meeting standard)
Geometry up 15.6% (from 79.3% to 94.9% meeting standard)
Biology up 30.4% (from 54.2% to 84.6% meeting standard)
We are extremely proud of the gains our students have made and we will continue to relentlessly work to improve them. One of the ways we are looking to improve our academic success is the implementation of EAGLE Time. EAGLE Time is designed to provide academic support and academic enrichment for all students tailored to their individual needs in order to meet graduation and academic goals. We will be having EAGLE Time for 30 minutes on Mondays and Thursdays after our first class of the day. During this time, students will have an opportunity to work on assignments, seek out teachers for questions or additional help, meet in study groups, retake tests or quizzes, attend college/career sessions, and become better connected to our FHS community. Each student will be assigned to a multi-grade EAGLE Time group and EAGLE Time mentor who will work with them throughout his/her FHS career.
Over the past year, I have also been experimenting with the social media program Twitter to increase Ferndale High School’s communication to our students and community. Our data shows that the old fashioned monthly newsletters are not how most people get information, they are using social media. I will continue to use Twitter as one of our main communication tools along with our Ferndale High website. I normally post items on our Twitter feed several times a week with information about FHS ranging from sporting events, schedules, important announcements or other relevant information. To learn how to create a free Twitter account and follow Ferndale High School, please go to twitter.com. Ferndale High School’s Twitter feed is @FerndaleHS.
Have a great 2013.14 school year and catch the “Ferndale Mojo”!
